NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar raises $2.8M for his Skyhook Foundation by selling his old memorabilia

Last Updated on

Perhaps wanting his collection of memorabilia marking his achievements with the Los Angeles Lakers to be of greater use than just hanging on his walls and/or in a cabinet.

NBA legend, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, put up thousands of memorabilia pieces: championships rings, MVP trophies and more up for sale in an auction to help raise money for the Skyhook Foundation.

“Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote. “That’s a history that has no price.”

The Skyhook Foundation is a nonprofit founded by Jabbar to help raise money for kids to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

Jabbar had a signed basketball that had a minimum bid of $35,000, championship rings that were a minimum bid of $65,000 each while his 1987 championship ring sold for $398,937.50
