Lori Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor, made history Tuesday night as the city of Chicago’s first Black female to be elected mayor.

Chicago will be the largest city within the United States to elect a Black woman as mayor and to also have an openly gay woman lead a progressive movement as mayor.  Lightfoot has never held an elected position, but ran a campaign against a woman who has been in public office for decades and swept her with a majority of the vote.

Lightfoot is 56-years-old with a partner and an 11-year-old daughter.
