Since Walt Disney announced their decision to cast the young and talented, Halle Bailey, in the new remake of their live-action Little Mermaid film as the underwater princess, Ariel.
Many came out strongly voicing their opinion and believing that the main character of, Ariel, should not be played by the 19-year-old Bailey who is an African-American. Walt Disney’s 1989 animated adaption was led by the voice of the actress, Jodi Benson, who was approximately 27-years-old at the time.
Many believe since the 1989 adaption of Ariel was an image of a White woman, that same image should continue to be portrayed today.
Then there is the Facebook group, “Christian’s Against the Little Mermaid (Boycott Halle Bailey).” The group description says:
” ❤️Welcome Fellow Christian’s❤️
Thank you for joining us on our mission! Disney has been ruining our childhood classics for the past several years. Their live-action adaptations have been abysmal but now they have gone too far!!! Disney has jumped on the bandwagon of turning prominent red headed, fair skinned characters into POC. Why not just create a new character? Why is Hollywood trying to wipe out gingers??? We will no longer tolerate this liberal propaganda! We are taking a stand against this injustice!!! Thank you for your support! AMEN🙏
We reached out to the group’s founder/admin, Wade Wilson, for comment as to why his group is against Bailey playing the role of Ariel, and he responded:
” Totally disappointed. This is my favourite Disney movie and I’ve been waiting for this for so long. I expected they would make it very similar to the original one (as it was for Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin). I am not disappointed because Ariel is black, but because Ariel is an iconic character, she was created with precise colours (they even created a new type of red and green for her hair and tail), so I think it should be right to have an Ariel not so different from the original one, as it was for Belle and Aurora. I would like an Ariel looking like Ariel and not like Janet Jackson. She is beautiful for sure and she has a beautiful voice, but it’s not fitting with the Disney character. And I think the same thing about Melissa, she has a face too sweet to play a witch, they should have chosen a drag queen, it would have been much better. “
We would also like to point out that the title of the group just recently changed to “Christian’s Against the Little Mermaid (Boycott Halle Bailey)” on July 4, 2019. The group was originally founded on July 9, 2017 as: “Love, compassion, & understanding, and since then the group has gone through a number of name changes.
Earlier this year Wade has also voiced his dislikes of Marvel’s, Black Panther, being nominated at the Oscars for seven categories including best picture.
Since publishing our article, “Christian’s Against the Little Mermaid (Boycott Halle Bailey),” on Friday, July 6th, we have come to the realization that, “Wade Wilson,” the person that is the founder of the group is a troll with a fake profile. As we have pointed out in this article previously, the name of the group has been changed several times since being established. Apparently, this troll changes the name of the group to whatever is trending and uses it as a means to create a divide people and spark controversy.
So people, please don’t engage too much with others in the group because that’s all they want so they can just sit back and laugh at us all.
Have a safe weekend and enjoy your time with loved ones.
