Chicago suburb seeks to become the first to provide financial reparations to Black residents

Evanston, Illinois – The city of Evanston, a suburb community north of Chicago, is moving forward to become the first city to provide reparations to its Black residents.

The city plans on using donations and a 3% tax from the sale of recreational cannabis. The funds will be used to distribute $10 million over a 10 year period to address various needs. The City council has decided to use the first $400,000 to address housing needs.

In 2019, the city council decided to adopt a financial plan to address the wealth and financial gaps of Blacks and provide financial compensation. For the past couple of years, the council has been working on designing the plan for reparations. The council will be moving forward with a final vote on March 22nd.
